More on three day paddle with Paul Ferguson, June 12, 13 and 14, 2004

Because of the length of these trips we will not be stopping to pick up trash. If we did we would never reach our destinaton.

On Saturday, on Pettiford Creek we know there will be practically zero trash as we and Sally Steele and her group have been keeping it clean. In fact, we can mark off Pettiford Creek for Big Sweep as being one Creek that does not have to be visited.

Also, if for any reason, anyone on this paddle wants to cut the trip short all they have to do is to turn around and paddle back to the put-in. The lenght of this trip is estimated to be under ten miles and this depends on how many side channels we choose to explore. We have emergency exits to dirt roads in Croatan National Forest one side and to the recently acquired public land on the other in the upper reaches of this creek.

On Sunday, on the White Oak, we will take note of any trash we see so we may get it later on another trip. We hope to have lunch at the half way mark, being a sandy beach below a high bluff all of which is part of Croatan National Forest seperated from the main forest and not accessible by land by vehicles. We call it Eagles Nest Beach as there usually is a bald eagle soaring overhead. We will clean up this beach if we encounter any trash here at lunch time.

On this trip there is no public access anywhere along the river on either side. In case of emergency we have several private access points we can use. Also, if someone wants to shorten the trip we can suggest several places they can leave their car thanks to the kindnes of private owners.
.
(The public access along Stella Road will be gone shortly when the new bridge is constructed. It is no less than a crime that this age old access is going to be destroyed leaving us with no free public access from Long Point on down on either side of The White Oak River. If you fishernmen and canoers and kayakers are as concerned as we are about this, I hope you will make your voice be heard where it counts to save this natural access with the old road being an excellent parking area already in place!).

On Monday, on the Hammocks Island Beach trip, the only way to cut it short is to turn aound and go back the way we came on the first, one third leg, of the trip and leave off the circle to the eastern tip of the island and back.

Come and join us on any part or all of these trips. Elmer

If you are not attending The Neuse River Days in New Bern you may like to join Paul Ferguson. Paul is the author of "Paddling Eastern North Carolina".

> On Sarurday we will put-in at the end of Pettiford Creek Road , State
> Road 1284. This is the 2nd paved road north of Pettiford Creek on Hwy
> 58 on the west side. We will meet there at 10:00 AM. This will be our
> take out too. We should be off the water by four or five depending on
> how much exploring we want to do.

On Sunday, present plans are to put in at Stella at Boondocks on The White Oak and paddle to Croatan Forest ramp in Cedar Point off Rte. 58. (First road left going north from Rte 24.) Left again on road by sign. Ramp is at end. Do not turn into campground. ( A northeast wind is supposed to develop on Sunday which will help take us down river.). We will leave shuttle vehicles at Cedar Point and meet there at 8:00. We should be off the river by 4:00.

This trip is #3 on map by Crystal Coast Canoe & Kayak Club, being The Western Carteret , White Oak River, Bear Island Map

On Monday we will meet at Hammocks Beach State Park. Turn off 24 at the ABC Store in Swansboro. Signs to the park are 10 miles out and also as you approach Hammocks Beach Road. When you enter turn immediately left to the put in and our take out for the day.

Please be there at 9:00. We will paddle over to the ferry landing on the island and walk over to visit the new facilities building on the island. We will then paddle along the shore line to the east end of Bear Island facing Emerald Isle and check out the camp sites that can be accessed by canoes and kayaks.

We will return by another route to Hammocks Beach via West Channel or Trail #6 (Trail # SC On-1) on map "The Western Carteret, White Oak River Area, Bear Island" and the ICW. Should be back by 4:00. Elmer

Queens Creek, June 9, 2004

Here are two pictures of an old clam dredger docked in Dicks Creek which is at the mouth of Queens Creek. We expolored this creek before turning up Queens Creek. The rest of the pictues are Marie's and were included in the story on e-mail I forwarded.

Her pics probably will appear in this blog. Elmer

Am sending you Marie's pictures this way. This is easier for me than to put them on our web site. (Sorry, see e-mial for pics by Marie. I cannotget them over here)

From left to right, Elmer Eddy, Ken Court, Linda Lacy, shy Tom Fineco in the rear, Jim Stevens, Pam Bader and Missy Tenhet.

The view is from Linda's lovely home high on a bluff overlooking Queens Creek. Those are thunderheads reflected on the water. We ate lunch in her tree house when a slight shower came by. Thunder in the distance almost caused us to turn around but it faded and we carried on only to get some more as we approached Rte 24. with lightning flashes to our left and thunder to our right but no rain.

The last picture is from the bridge on Old 24 at the take-out. The large bucket was about the only trash on Queens Creek . We picked up very few bottles and cans and styrofoam cups. Lisa, you can cross off Queens Creek for Big Sweep, no trash!

We saw a few egrets and great blue herons and two osprey sceaming. Three snakes, the last won was under the huge culverts on 24 about 8 feet off the water and coiled up on a swallows mud nest on the wall. How did he get up there? The jumping mullett were making large swirls as we approached the large schools in the shallow waters.

We went over Queens Creek reversible falls ( six inches, not 40 feet like St Johns River.) They were washed out when we got there. We explored Dicks Creek too. Saw the old clam dredger which has seen its better days. (picture on web).

We said our sad goodbyes to Pam Bader. We will miss her very much. No piece of trash ever escaped Pam. The whole White Oak River Basin will miss her!

This was a fine, fun filled last trip to send her off to Quantico where her husband, Bob, has been transferred. We will miss you too Bob. Elmer
