2005-29-05, this Wednesday, Slocum Creek, Neuse River, Hancock Creek
This is the same trip Cal Hansen lead on May 14th for CCC&KC. We cannot improve on his directions which follow. We anticipate southerly winds predominating and will go from Havelock Ramp to Cahooque Creek. We will meet at 9:00 at Havelock Ramp. If any two or more of you can set-up the shuttle vehicles at Cahooque Creek that will same us time. We expect to be off the water by 3:00.
We also will hug the right shore line and pick up all trash if any. Don Sykes is down from Cary and will be paddling with us. Elmer
"Cherry Point Marine Air Station Paddle
We will meet in Havelock at the Slocum Creek Boat Ramp. The ramp is located just off of Hwy 70, 1.3 miles north (toward New Bern) of the Hwy70/ Hwy101 intersection in Havelock. Watch for the sign on Hwy 70 leading you to the Hampton Inn and the Havelock Visitor/Event Center. Turn off Hwy 70 on to access road then left on frontage road. Continue straight ahead on frontage road about 1/10 mile, do not turn into the Visitors Center/Motel. The boat ramp is on the right side of the frontage road. Restrooms are available in the Visitors Center.
TAKE OUT:
The take-out will be at the Cahooque Creek Wildlife Boat Ramp located off of Hwy 101 and Cahooque Creek Road. From launch, turn left (toward Beaufort) on Hwy 101. Turn left on Cahooque Creek Road (5.1 miles from intersection of Hwy 70 and Hwy 101). Cahooque Creek Road is about 1/2 mile West (or toward Havelock) of Hwy 306 Ferry Road. Travel 2 miles to end of pavement and then take a left (follow sign to the ramp) about 1.6 miles. Pit type outhouse available at take-out as well.
PLEASE NOTE:
The above put-in / take-out is planned for southerly or westerly winds. If winds are north or easterly, we will reverse the paddle route as well as the put-in/ take-out locations. This will help avoid paddling directly into the wind for most of the trip. Decision will be made at the meeting site prior to launch. Should we have an extremely windy day, all is not lost! We will launch at the Cahooque Ramp and paddle the lovely protected waters of Cahooque and Hancock Creeks. "
