2005-06-10,The following is a report on Trash and Litter on Newport River Paddle

The following is a report on the lovely Newport Port River from Morehead at Crab Point to Newport. The pictures tell the story.

The ten mile trip on the river was beautiful and enjoyed by all.

The dump we had to drive through to launch our boats was ghastly. This will be the second time we have reported this to Carteret County authorities. We now state that in our opinion this dump is an environmental hazard to the health of the waters of the Newport River and the land and the nearby neighbors at Crab Point.
We hope this will get this dump cleaned up. It has been on fire in the past and it will be again and the toxic fumes will be hazardous to the local residents.

This brings us to Shackleford Banks. I am told the same condition exists over there except it is spread over the entire island just like it was last year. We cannot do much about this with our canoes and kayaks. By the time it takes us to get over there and back we have little time for clean up and no way to carry all the trash. We suggest to Carteret County authorties and our Tourists Association that they organize a squadron of motor boats to take people over there to clean it up so there will be some truth in our advertising about clean unspoiled beaches awaiting for our visiting toursts. .
