Paddling Cowhorn Creek and The New River, April 9, 2005

Paddling April 9, 2005, Cowhorn Creek and The New River. Pic #357 is of the vlounteers at the launching.

On this day we joined The New River Foundation to help clean up part of the New Onslow County Paddle Trail being Section #1 from Steed's Park launching site at Cowhorn Creek on Cowhorn Road, State Road #1311 to McAllister Landing at Rhodestown Road, State Road # 1316.This trip was lead by Brian Wheat.

Some came equipped with chain saws and removed the few new blown down trees. The rest of us picked up trash.

See pic # 363. These are not trash. These are expensive balls. The source must be Richland schools!

# 365. Now this is trash! The majority of it was trapped by "strainers" in the New River. What isn't caught by strainers floats on down to the Jacksonville waterfront or sinks to remain forever on the bottom of the New River.

To be blunt about it, Richlands is dumping on Jacksonville and trashing the upper New River Basin!

Richlands, Onslow County, NCDOT and Jacksonville need to face this problem. Unless they jointly address this situation and find some means to stop the deliberate dumping of trash off bridges we will forever have a trashy river.

The river was excellent. It was full with good water with a strong flow. Paddling conditions could not have been finer. We shot over beaver dams with the thrill of a little white water rapids paddling. The new growth of plants and flowers and new leaves on the trees were absolutely beautiful. More pictures are on our web site.

This Monday we join the Crystal Coast Canoe & Kayak Club to paddle Smyrna Creek near Smyrna. Details are on our web site. Elmer
